Turmeric Green Juice
I started my 2015 with a 3 day juice and soup 'retreat'...at home! It wasn't a detox, it wasn't a cleanse, it was a chance for me to switch off, catch up on sleep, give my immune system a boost and set myself up for the year ahead. On the 2nd of January I arrived at Borough Market and filled up my shopping bags with the most wonderful selection of carrots, beetroots, ginger, greens, some more greens, and a whole load of other wonderful, fresh fruits and vegetables. I experimented with lots of new juice recipes, as well as recreating some of my favourites. I really wanted to share this new one with you as I know lots of people will have set health focused intentions for the new year and juice is such a great place to start. You don't have to give up food and only drink juice, in fact this was the first time I have ever done that for more than a day. I just love adding a juice to my day, either with my breakfast or as a midmorning or afternoon boost.
Turmeric is such an amazing addition to this juice. Not only does it help fight colds and flu, it has such powerful anti-inflammatory properties and is extremely high in antioxidants. This is because it contains a curcumanoid called curcumin. Inflammation is an essential bodily reaction needed for fighting foreign invaders and helping our body to repair itself. However, while acute inflammation is beneficial, chronic (or long-term) inflammation has been linked to heart disease, cancer, Alzheimer's and many other Western diseases. So anti-inflammatory foods are really important in protecting against chronic inflammation.
Ingredients (Serves 2)
1 thumb of ginger
2 tsp of ground turmeric powder or 1 piece of turmeric root
Place the cucumber, celery and ginger into your juicer. If you are using turmeric root, add it in too.
Use a citrus press to squeeze the lemon. You could also peel this and then juice it instead.
Stir in the lemon and turmeric powder if seperate.
I would love to know what you think of this one so please do get in touch!
