Natural Deodorant

IMG_4113 A little while ago I did a post on here all about my bathroom essentials. Somehow, I forgot to include deodorants which is funny because I come across a few that really are so amazing, I can’t believe I haven’t shared them yet!

So why should we be careful with what deodorant we choose? We absorb so much of what we put on our skin that we should try to keep things as natural as possible. By applying deodorants with toxic ingredients to our bodies every day, we are significantly increasing our exposure to harmful chemicals, which are absorbed into our blood stream through our skin. We all know that we should avoid aluminium in deodorants, but there are other things like parabens, chemicals and additives that we also want to steer clear of. Rather than trying to get my head around complicated ingredients labels, I wanted to go as natural as possible, or stick to brands that I really trust.

I actually started off by using coconut oil as deodorant. I was given a few recommendations for doing so, or for using a slice of lemon or lime for the most natural protection, and decided that coconut oil seemed the least strange of them all! So when I came across The Natural Deodorant Company, I was keen to try it. Their product uses coconut oil as a base, but with additional natural ingredients that help to improve the protection in offers. They come in handy pots in both at home and travel sizes which means the product is a good option for keeping in your gym bag. I find that I like to use this best when I have just showered, rather than to ‘freshen up’ – for those I like something with a natural scent that I can spray to keep me feeling fresh!

So in those cases, there are two great products that I would really recommend. The first is a Lime & Sage deo by Burt’s Bees. It’s actually my favourite all round but it pretty tricky to get hold of in the UK for some reason so I tend not to use it so much and just badger friends going to the USA to pick me up a few bottles whenever I can.

The last one is from Neal’s Yard Remedies and it’s a wonderfully calming lavender deodorant spray. This one is obviously much easier to find and has a lovely smell too.

All three of these products get my vote, and I would recommend them all – they are similar in price but just vary a little in availability, depending on where you are in the world. So give them a try and let me know what you think – and if you have any other suggestions, I would love to hear about them of course!
